Die Kollektion E-MERGENCE entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fraunhofer IZM Berlin und lotet die technologischen Möglichkeiten von elektronischen Textilien (E- Textiles) aus. Diese wurden unter Berücksichtigung kreislaufwirtschaftlicher Aspekte in die Kleidungsstücke integriert. In diesem Zuge kamen diverse Technologien zum Einsatz, wie etwa technische Stickereien, 3D-Druck, Digitaler Direktdruck sowie die Verwendung von Pflanzenfarben. Im Entwicklungsprozess entstandene Samples wurden in Teilen der Kollektion wiederverwendet. Der Titel verweist auf das Zusammenspiel und die Komplexität der Themen Epilepsie, Elektronik und Nachhaltigkeit. Epilepsie, eine der ältesten Krankheiten, die immer noch stigmatisiert und nicht vollständig erforscht oder behandelbar ist, bot nicht nur Inspiration, sondern auch ein Anwendungsfeld. Das Konzept der Kollektion ist so komplex und individuell wie die Erkrankung selbst. Fünf intelligente Kleidungsstücke bieten verschiedene Möglichkeiten, Menschen mit Epilepsie bei der Bewältigung ihrer Krankheit auf physiologischer oder psychologischer Ebene zu unterstützen. Durch Überschneidungen mit den Themengebieten Angststörungen und Stressbewältigung, adressiert die Kollektion stellenweise auch diese allgemeingesellschaftlicheren Trends.

Ausgehend von meinen persönlichen Erfahrungen als Epileptikerin bin ich sehr fasziniert von den Parallelen in den Funktionsweisen von neuronalen, organischen Strukturen und elektronischen Komponenten. Darum dreht sich sowohl inhaltlich als auch gestalterisch das Konzept um Elektrizität im und am Körper. In Kombination mit Nachhaltigkeitsaspekten entstanden dabei zum Beispiel Printdesigns mit Neuronen aus „Metall“, die auf den problematischen Umgang mit seltenen Erden für Elektronik anspielen. Weitere Aspekte wie Schutz, Scham, Entstigmatisierung und ein Gefühl für den eigenen Körper sind Leitmotive der Kollektion.

The E-MERGENCE collection was created in collaboration with Fraunhofer IZM Berlin and explores the technological possibilities of electronic textiles (e-textiles). These were integrated into the garments while taking circular economy aspects into account. Various technologies were used in the process, such as technical embroidery, 3D printing, digital printing and the use of plant-based dyes. Samples created during the development process were reused in parts of the collection. The title refers to the connection and complexity of the themes of epilepsy, electronics and sustainability. Epilepsy, one of the oldest diseases that is still stigmatized and not fully understood or treatable, offered not only inspiration but also a field of application. The concept of the collection is as complex and individual as the disease itself. Five intelligent garments offer different ways of helping people with epilepsy to manage their condition on a physiological or psychological level. By overlapping with the topics of anxiety disorders and stress management, the collection also addresses these more general social trends in some places.

Based on my personal experience as an epileptic, I am very fascinated by the parallels in the functioning of neuronal, organic structures and electronic components. This is why the concept revolves around electricity in and on the body, both in terms of content and design. In combination with sustainability aspects, this has resulted in print designs with neurons made of “metal”, for example, which allude to the problematic use of rare earths for electronics. Other aspects such as protection, shame, destigmatization and a feeling for one’s own body are leitmotifs of the collection.

Pauline wurde 1997 in Berlin geboren und arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von Design, Forschung und Technologie. 2017 schloss sie ihre Ausbildung zur Gestaltungstechnischen Assistentin für Mode und Design an der Modeschule Berlin (ehemals OSZ Bekleidung und Mode) ab. Sie war bei diversen Produktionen im Bereich Kostüm tätig und sammelte zusätzliche Erfahrungen beim Label THIMMHOTH Couture. 2021-2022 absolvierte sie Praktika im FabLab Barcelona und bei Clara Daguin in Paris. 2023 schloss Pauline ihr Bachelorstudium im Fach Modedesign an der HTW Berlin ab, wo sie aktuell im Master Bekleidungstechnik studiert.

Pauline hat ein stark ausgeprägtes Bewusstsein für die Natur sowie ein Fable für alles Ungewöhnliche und ist sehr wissensdurstig. Ihre Arbeit ist wahrscheinlich deshalb stark von Innovation und Nachhaltigkeit geprägt. Ihre Motivation ist es, Neues zu erschaffen und durch eine Kombination traditioneller sowie neuer Techniken nachhaltige Lösungen zu finden. Seit 2020 ist sie Werkstudentin am Fraunhofer Institut für Zuverlässigkeit und Mikrointegration Berlin, wo sie mit elektronischen und innovativen Materialien arbeitet. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fraunhofer IZM entstand ihre Abschluss-Kollektion „E-MERGENCE“.

Pauline was born in Berlin in 1997 and works at the interface of design, research and technology. In 2017, she completed her apprenticeship as a design assistant for fashion and design at the Modeschule Berlin (formerly OSZ Bekleidung und Mode). She worked on various productions in the costume area and gained additional experience at the label THIMMHOTH Couture. 2021-2022 she interned at FabLab Barcelona and Clara Daguin in Paris. In 2023, Pauline completed her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at HTW Berlin, where she is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Clothing Technology.

Pauline has a strong awareness of nature as well as a fable for all things unusual and is very thirsty for knowledge. Her work is probably therefore strongly characterized by innovation and sustainability. Her motivation is to create new things and find sustainable solutions by combining traditional and new techniques. Since 2020, she has been a working student at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration Berlin, where she works with electronics and innovative materials. Her graduation collection “E-MERGENCE” was created in collaboration with Fraunhofer IZM.
