„Fashion for an Empty World“ versteht sich als eine Bestandaufnahme. Sie hält den Moment fest, in dem Fülle, Übermaß und Exzess in die Leere umschlägt. Inspiriert von einem Zitat von Sloterdijk befasst sie sich mit einer Welt in der „Grauzone“. Diese macht sich immer wieder bemerkbar, „sobald die Ordnung versagt, ohne dass das Chaos willkommen wäre“. Die Kollektion bricht mit der Erwartung, dass Mode stets Neues produziert.
Stattdessen zeigt sie, dass es sich vielmehr um neue Varianten des Vorhandenen handelt. Jeder der entwickelten Looks beschreibt eine Übersteigerung und Ausreizung von bekannten Kleidungsstücken. So passen überlange Nähte nicht auf ihre Gegenstücke, riesige Hemden werden zwanghaft auf den Körper geknautscht, und großzügige Röcke entpuppen sich als Stolperfallen. „Fashion for an Empty World“, als eine Betrachtung des Ist-Zustands, ist vielleicht nicht die Lösung für unsere voll-leere Welt, doch sie ist eine neugierige Betrachtung des bunt-grauen Rauschens.

“Fashion for an Empty World” is a close examination of the current state of fashion. It freezes the moment in time, where overflow, excessiveness and abundance implode and turn into emptiness and meaninglessness. Inspired by a quote by Sloterdijk, the collection plays out in a grey area, which always makes itself noticeable, when “order fails without chaos being welcome to ensue.” The collection negates the general notion that fashion creates newness and instead states that it rather produces new variations of what is already there.
Each look visualizes an exaggeration and an exhaustion of what we already know. In this way, seams turn out too long and will not fit their counterparts, gigantic dress shirts are forced onto the human body and overly long skirts cause wearers to trip over them. “Fashion for an Empty World” may not be a solution to our overfilled-empty world, but it is a more curious look at the colourfully grey noise we experience.

Eine besondere Begeisterung hat Paula für die ästhetische Nachhaltigkeit; den Anspruch, Mode zu gestalten, die möglichst lange geliebt und getragen werden kann. Eine wichtige Spielweise dessen ist für sie die Neugierde für das Ungewöhnliche. Hierfür setzt sie unerwartete Materialien in neue Kontexte, verwandelt Alltagsgegenstände in Accessoires und lässt klassische Schnitte überraschend anders auftreten.

Paula Lessel’s design work focuses on creating an artistic form for abstract concepts, personal storytelling and current matters. Her concepts often take a philosophical approach to uncover surprising perspectives on how we can view the world we live in. Getting to heart of the narrative her storytellings create is one of her main priorities. Oftentimes, during the design process many creative strategies come into play- whether it is through her collage technique for sketching, innovative pattern drafting or poetic details.
One of her strongest interests in design is the principle of aesthetic sustainability; creating garments, that can be loved and worn for a longtime. Here, the “pleasure of the unfamiliar” and curious questioning are put into focus. She will allow fashion classics to take on a surprisingly different form, put unusual material into new contexts and turn every day objects into stylish accessories.
