Konzept

In seinem Essay Philosophie der Mode von 1905 betrachtet Georg Simmel Mode aus verschiedenen soziologischen Aspekten heraus. Auf den des Klassenbegriffs und den der Nachhaltigkeit wird in der Ausstellung und auch im Folgenden eingegangen. Mode ist nach Simmel nämlich zunächst auf den Klassenbegriff zurückzuführen. Sie ist nach ihm sowohl gemeinschaftsstiftend als auch exkludierend. Die verschiedenen Stände einer Klassengesellschaft repräsentieren sich über die unterschiedlichen Konventionen des Kleidungsstils, der nur innerhalb einer gewissen Klasse getragen werden soll, um Personen mit ähnlichem Lebensstil wiedererkennen zu können und „die Anderen“ als nicht zugehörig zu markieren. Nun beschreibt Simmel auch Situationen, in denen die Kleidungsstile der höheren Stände von niedrigeren angeeignet wurden. Dies führte nach Simmel dazu, dass die höheren Stände neue Modestile für sich einführten, um sich weiterhin abgrenzen und distanzieren zu können. Die Produktion von Neuheiten und die Nachahmung von bestehenden Kleidungsstilen nahm so ihren Lauf und macht aus der Mode ein fluides und sich stetig weiterentwickelndes Medium.

Zwar gibt es in der heutigen Zeit den Klassenbegriff, wie Georg Simmel ihn noch verstanden hat, nicht mehr, allerdings hakt vor allem die Kollektion THE LOSS OF FUNCTION – THE ART OF FASHION hier trotzdem ein. Sie postuliert ein Umdenken, bei der Mode kein Akteur des gemeinschaftsstiftenden und des ausschließenden Prinzips ist. Denn auch heute noch wird Mode durch die verschiedenen Stile, Marken und Preise als System verstanden, das mitverantwortlich für Gruppenbildung sein kann und auch durch die Haute Couture, die nicht für alle zugänglich ist, wird ein Klassendenken hervorgerufen. So wird beispielsweise in manchen Schulen eine Schuluniform eingeführt, um genau solchen gemeinschaftsstiftenden und exkludierenden Elementen entgegenzuwirken. Da eine Gemeinschaft zu bilden auch gleichzeitig bedeutet, das Umliegende auszuschließen, wird die Kollektion THE LOSS OF FUNCTION – THE ART OF FASHION hier anders eingesetzt. Vielmehr soll sie für jede:n erfahrbar werden und nicht nur für bestimmte Gruppen.

Die Mode ist an dieser Stelle das perfekte künstlerische Medium, um Inklusion zu erfahren. So können Personen ähnlich wie bei einem Kostüm in die Rolle des Outfits schlüpfen, um sich den Zauber der einzelnen Sinne in ihrer Verstärkung hinzugeben und zu verstehen. Auch das Outfit SINNLOS stellt dabei nicht den Moment dar, Gemeinschaften zu stiften oder Personengruppen auszuschließen. Es erklärt sich als offenes Medium für alle, um die Hürden nicht vollständig funktionierender Sinne zu verstehen und zu erfahren, ohne dabei für bestimmte Personen genäht worden zu sein.

Über mich

Mein Name ist Han, 24, in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen. Mode war schon immer ein Medium für mich, welches immer mehr Funktionen gewann desto besser ich es kennenlernen durfte. Ich fokussiere mich bei meinen Designs an den Menschen und seine Verbundenheit mit der Kleidung. Mode kann uns durch seine Kunstvollen Eigenschaften auf eine neue Weise berühren und uns zu Diskussionen und Austausch führen. Ich freue mich auf kommende neugierige Gespräche mit und über die Mode.

Concept In his 1905 essay Philosophy of Fashion, Georg Simmel looks at fashion from various sociological aspects. That of the concept of class and that of sustainability will be addressed in the exhibition and also in the following. According to Simmel, fashion can first be traced back to the concept of class. According to him, it is both community-founding and exclusionary. The different classes of a class society represent themselves through the different conventions of clothing style, which should only be worn within a certain class in order to be able to recognise people with similar lifestyles and to mark „the others“ as not belonging. Now Simmel also describes situations in which the dress styles of the higher classes were appropriated by lower ones. According to Simmel, this led to the higher classes introducing new fashion styles for themselves in order to be able to continue to distinguish and distance themselves. The production of novelties and the imitation of existing clothing styles thus took its course, making fashion a fluid and constantly evolving medium.

Although the concept of class as Georg Simmel understood it no longer exists today, the collection THE LOSS OF FUNCTION – THE ART OF FASHION nevertheless takes up this challenge. It postulates a rethinking in which fashion is not an agent of the community-creating and the exclusionary principle. For even today, fashion is understood as a system through the various styles, brands and prices, which can be partly responsible for group formation, and class thinking is also evoked by haute couture, which is not accessible to all. For example, school uniforms are introduced in some schools to counteract precisely such community-building and exclusionary elements. Since forming a community also means excluding the surrounding, the collection THE LOSS OF FUNCTION – THE ART OF FASHION is used differently here. Rather, it should be experienced by everyone and not only by certain groups.

Fashion is the perfect artistic medium to experience inclusion. In a similar way to a costume, people can slip into the role of the outfit in order to surrender to and understand the magic of the individual senses in their amplification. The outfit SINNLOS does not represent the moment to create communities or to exclude groups of people. It declares itself to be an open medium for everyone to understand and experience the hurdles of incompletely functioning senses without being sewn for specific people.

I focus my designs on people and their connection with clothes. Fashion can touch us in a new way through its artful qualities and lead us to discussion and exchange.
