Design as Spatial Expression – A Collection Inspired by Movements of Empowerment and Resistance – Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin

Design as Spatial Expression is an interdisciplinary fashion collection exploring the body as a site of spatial expression, resistance, and transformation. Situated at the intersection of fashion, architecture, and sport, the project investigates how garments can function as dynamic structures that respond to the body in motion.

Informed by research on women in architecture and the persistence of the so-called „glass ceiling,“ the collection engages with themes of visibility, restriction, and empowerment. The work of architects such as Zaha Hadid, Kazuyo Sejima, Farshid Moussavi, and Eileen Gray inspires a rethinking of space as fluid, responsive, and human-centred – translated into garments that move in dialogue with the wearer.

Drawing from Bauhaus principles and Kandinsky’s abstraction of movement, the project extends into the realm of sport, where running becomes a form of spatial practice. Movement is understood as an act of self-realisation and feminist agency.

All technical materials were sustainably sourced, with an emphasis on minimal waste production. Construction methods such as heat pressing, laser cutting, and bonded zippers highlight the technical rigour and quality of the garments whilst enhancing their functionality. The collection merges performance with elegance, proposing fashion as a spatial and embodied design practice.

Huyền Nguyễn is a designer and writer working at the intersection of fashion, architecture, and sport. Her practice explores the body as a site of movement and spatial expression, translating research into form – where garments become structures and movement becomes a method of design. Rooted in critical theory and lived experience, her work engages with identity, empowerment, and feminist perspectives. She holds an M.A. in Media Studies from Humboldt University Berlin and a B.A. in Fashion Design from HTW Berlin.
