beyond_mobility – Fachhochschule Bielefeld

beyond_mobility explores the role of the bicycle as the primary mode of transportation in the city of the future. The collection is based on an exploration of sustainable mobility and urban environments in which cycling is already the dominant means of transportation and an integral part of a modern, environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Central to the design process were the following questions: 

How can clothing support people in moving through urban spaces with flexibility, comfort, and style? What new demands on functional clothing – particularly regarding mobility and comfort – emerge within the urban context of the future?

The project focuses on rethinking and advancing the concept of functional clothing while developing garment solutions that respond to changing weather conditions and diverse everyday situations. The resulting designs are lightweight, adaptable, and designed for freedom of movement, making them suitable both for cycling and for the varied clothing needs of urban residents. Integrated features and flexible carrying solutions reinterpret traditional cycling apparel, merging practicality, protection, and contemporary aesthetics into a new fashion expression. 

My name is Lorena, I am 23 years old, and I completed my Bachelor’s degree at HSBI in Bielefeld in 2025. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree there. In my design practice, I am committed to creating clothing that is sustainable, durable, and suited to everyday life. My ideas often emerge through hands-on experimentation and analogue working methods – tactile engagement with materials, forms, and construction techniques is central to my creative process.

Many of my projects are based on deadstock materials. Rather than seeing the limited availability and unique characteristics of these fabrics as restrictions, I view them as creative opportunities. I am particularly fascinated by denim, whose versatility continues to inspire me.

For me, high-quality craftsmanship is just as important as design itself. I aim to create garments that are made to be worn for a long time and whose quality can be felt.

At the center of my work is the wearer: How can clothing respond to people’s needs, simplify everyday life, and at the same time enable individual expression? The connection between function, material, and identity forms the foundation of good design.
