Something’s Wrong – AMD Akademie Mode & Design

Lisa Marie Hilmann is a fashion designer specialising in conceptual design at the intersection of craftsmanship, emotion and social commentary. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at the Academy of Fashion & Design in Düsseldorf. In her work, she explores emotional states, moods and questions of identity, protection and well-being, translating these into minimalist, material-driven designs. In doing so, she combines experimental draping with pattern construction, tailoring and leatherwork. Her pieces emerge from a keen sensitivity to materials and convey tension, calm and vulnerability through form and surface. She sees fashion as a quiet, intimate language that makes inner states visible. 

 The collection “Something’s Wrong” explores psychological strain and the contrasts between anxiety, panic and a longing for better times. Emotional states are translated into silhouettes, materials and constructions, making inner tensions visible. Amidst a sense of confinement, heaviness and loss of control, a need for protection and security simultaneously emerges. Clothing becomes “armour” that can provide stability and help in dealing with stressful situations. The collection moves between restriction and freedom: tight straps, corsets and leather represent pressure and protection, whilst flowing silhouettes, organza, knitwear and sheer fabrics express lightness, hope and vulnerability. Both poles reflect the ambivalence of psychological experiences. The armour, inspired by motorsport and tailoring, represents not aggression but security. Leather acts as a second skin, offering protection whilst bearing individual traces. This is complemented by the balaclava as a symbol of protection, retreat and security. Black, white and natural tones emphasise the duality of fear and hope. “Something’s Wrong” views fashion as a coping strategy that connects emotional and physical needs and can create a sense of security within one’s own body.
