L’abito di una vita (The Dress of a Lifetime) explores two contrasting ways of archiving and remembering Sicily: the documentary photography of Arrigo Amaduzzi, the designer’s grandfather, and the historical clothing collection of Raffaello Piraino. Both were active in Palermo during the 1960s and 1970s, yet engaged with different historical contexts and social realities. Amaduzzi documented the living conditions of post-war Sicily – workers, women, and political activists – capturing an atmosphere marked by poverty, mourning, and resilience. Piraino, by contrast, collected and preserved clothing from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, safeguarding the memory of aristocratic and bourgeois social classes.
The title draws inspiration from the Sicilian mourning dress, a symbol of how clothing can hold memory and mark the passage of time between what is lost and what endures. Rather than treating these archives as separate, the collection fuses them into a shared design language. A central motif is the prickly pear (fico d’india), whose skeleton becomes the fil rouge of the collection and a symbol of a natural archive. When the plant dries, it leaves behind a delicate yet resilient structure – an emblem of memory, transformation, and endurance.
The collection translates these archival methods into a living archive. Memory is understood not as passive nostalgia, but as an active practice: preserving, translating, and carrying forward what might otherwise disappear. The material selection combines natural fibres with contemporary materials, creating a dialogue between tradition and experimentation. The design process includes intuitive draping, laser cutting as a contemporary technique, and the study of historical construction methods and handcraft techniques such as pleating and embroidery.
Laura Abbondandolos gestalterische Arbeit bewegt sich im Spannungsfeld von Kunst, Handwerk und Mode. Im Zentrum ihres Interesses steht die Frage, wie Kleidung Erinnerung, Identität und kulturelle Erzählungen sichtbar machen kann. Geprägt durch ihr Aufwachsen zwischen Italien und Deutschland sowie eine frühe Auseinandersetzung mit visueller Gestaltung, versteht sie Mode als Medium zwischen persönlicher Geschichte und Ausdruck. In ihrem Designprozess verbindet sie historische Recherche mit experimenteller Textilgestaltung, handwerklichen Techniken sowie einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit Silhouette und Material. So entstehen Arbeiten, die zwischen Kunst, Körper und Kleidung vermitteln und sowohl persönliche als auch gesellschaftliche Geschichten sichtbar machen.
