Ever since I’ve started studying the art of fashion, I‘ve found movies to be a never-ending source of inspiration.

Usually, I like to fixate on the representation of certain groups and find different tropes, which seem to appear in different movies.

A lot of the time I especially get hooked on the portrayal of women and girls in movies and interpret the way in which the media portrays us, reflects and shapes the way we are treated in society.

Lately girlhood has been a reoccurring theme, not just for me, but for many others it seems.

However, this interest in girlhood and teenage girls is not at all new to the media. I couldn’t help but notice how idealized our picture of being a teenage girl is, now that we ourselves have grown out of that time. The teenage girl is almost a mystical being at this point, usually white and skinny. She’s painted in rosy lights and showing us just the perfect amount of vulnerability.

The perfect balance of maturity and purity. Bonus points if she is really really sad.

And while the reappearance of femininity is so very welcome and refreshing, it quickly takes a dark turn when we realize that the women on our screens are usually not a day over thirty.

With my bachelor‘s collection I also was aiming to portray a somewhat idealized version of girlhood. While it is something I love to relish in, I do not look on my own teenage years with the same adoration.

My collection is supposed to make the teenage girl appear as even more of a mystical being. I want to make her ethereal while also giving her all the weapons she needs to fend for herself.

Filme waren für mich eine nie endende Inspiration, seit ich begonnen habe Modedesign zu studieren.

Meist konzentriere ich mich dabei insbesondere auf die Darstellung von Frauen und Mädchen in Filmen und interpretiere die Art und Weise, wie Filme uns darstellen.

In letzter Zeit ist die sogenannte „Girlhood“ ein wiederkehrendes Thema, nicht nur für mich, sondern für viele andere.

Dieses Interesse an „Girlhood“ und Teenager-Mädchen ist für Filme und Mode jedoch keineswegs neu. Dank ihnen haben wir ein äußerst idealisiertes Bild davon, wie es ist, als Mädchen aufzuwachsen. Auf Bildschirmen scheinen wir fast zu einer Art Fabelwesen zu werden, meist weiß, dünn und wunderschön. Extra Punkte wenn sie unendlich traurig sind.

Genau zwischen Erwachsen Sein und Unschuld.

Und obwohl das Wiederkehren dieser „girly“ Elemente sehr willkommen und erfrischend ist, nimmt es schnell eine düstere Wendung, wenn wir erkennen, dass die Frauen auf unseren Bildschirmen normalerweise keinen Tag älter als dreißig sind.

Obwohl ich Filme mit dieser Thematik zugegebenermaßen selbst sehr genieße, blicke ich nicht mit derselben Bewunderung auf meine eigenen Teenagerjahre.

Meine Kollektion soll das Teenager-Mädchen noch mehr als mystisches Wesen erscheinen lassen. Ich möchte sie geradezu überirdisch machen und ihr gleichzeitig alle Waffen geben, die sie braucht, um für sich selbst zu verteidigen.

About Me – Englisch My name is Antonia Mayer, and I have been studying fashion design since October 2020 at Reutlingen University. During my studies, I have been able to gain a lot of knowledge on the creating of garments and experience in the fashion industry, especially during my internships. In my collection’s I have always drawn inspiration from the movies and books I consume, especially concerning the portrayal of women. I like to incorporate a feminine feel to my designs and show the ambiguity of women, which I feel if often lacking on screens. About Me – Deutsch

Mein Name ist Antonia Mayer und ich studiere seit Oktober 2020 Modedesign an der Hochschule Reutlingen. Während meines Studiums konnte ich viel Wissen über die Herstellung von Kleidungsstücken und Erfahrungen in der Modebranche sammeln, insbesondere während meiner Praktika.

Für meine Kollektionen habe ich mich immer von den Filmen und Büchern inspirieren lassen, welche ich konsumiere, insbesondere wenn es um die Darstellung von Frauen geht. Ich verleihe meinen Designs gerne eine feminine Note und versuche die Vielseitigkeit der Frau zu zeigen, die meiner Meinung nach auf Bildschirmen oft fehlt.
