Information Overload – Hochschule Niederrhein

English version below

I am Anna Droemont, a clothing management and design engineer student at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. My bachelor thesis “Information Overload” deals with the causes and effects of the excess of information in today’s society and examines the consequences of media use. Due to digitalization and modern communication technology, the amount of information people have to deal with on a daily basis has increased significantly. In the first part of the collection, the overloading of information is symbolized with drapery and volume. It stands for an active acceptance of information overload and for growth, which is made possible by the modern communication society. The garments should protect against excessive demands by means of a layered look and resistant materials and thus enable the approach and management of large amounts of information. Compared with that the second part of the collection stands for retreat and relaxation. For this purpose, the design strategy is consciously reduced and omitted. Also transparent and shiny fabrics stand for clarity. In addition, subtle windings, ribbons and folds symbolize protection and security. Both sub-collections are designed in such a way that their different worlds can be mixed by being individually combined with one another. This allows the wearer more freedom in personal expression and also fits the realistic situation in today’s society, in which it is not possible to completely hide from the flood of information, but it is important to maintain a critical and questioning attitude.
