Escaping the White Cube – Hochschule Hannover

My collection: “Escaping the White Cube” 

The main inspiration behind this collection was Brian O’Doherty’s essay Inside the White Cube, which questions the seemingly neutral white exhibition space and highlights its active role in the creation and perception of art. The so-called “White Cube” is not merely a place of presentation, but a creative element in itself which influences the way art is experienced. 

Starting from this idea, my collection explores the relationship between fashion, art, and space: What happens to fashion when it leaves its conventional environments, such as the runway, the store, or the studio? How does its perception change when it is placed in a new spatial and artistic context — or when it enters everyday life? 

The collection is conceived as a journey through different artistic periods, styles, and visual languages. Inspirations range from El Lissitzky’s constructivist compositions and Anni Albers’ textile works to the artworks of my mother, Stefanie Hofer, alongside numerous other artistic influences. In this way, a dialogue emerges between past and present, between artwork, space, and garment. 

My name is Laurin Hofer, I’m 23 years old and originally from a small town near Munich, Germany. Four years ago, I moved to Hanover to study Fashion Design and am currently completing my Bachelor’s degree. 

For me, fashion is a way of making my thoughts, emotions, and perspectives visible. II’m particularly fascinated by the connection between fashion and art — the possibility of telling stories, combining different forms of creative expression, and continuously immersing myself in new themes and ideas. 

I’m a determined and curious person who finds inspiration in many areas of cultural life. Besides fashion, I am most passionate about literature, music, film, cinema, and art itself. These diverse influences strongly shape my creative perspective and naturally flow into my designs. 

Through my work, I aim to create new perspectives and continuously challenge ways of thinking, to redefine the boundaries between fashion and art.
