RATS
„We’re the freaks to a lot of people, but here we are like gods.“
The world of “RATS” revolves around the art of bodybuilding and the cultural meanings embodied
within the physique. Through understanding the athlete’s body as a medium for self-expression and
identity formation, the collection explores the symbolic significance that muscularity holds within
bodybuilding culture.
Rather than interpreting the cultivated body as a sign of dominance or hypermasculinity, “RATS”
approaches bodybuilding as a practice of self-care and continuous self-creation.
My name is Jasper Smolnik and strength training is a major part of my life.
I have been lifting for the past few years now and have worked extensively as a coach alongside my
studies. Across my creative work, fitness and design often come together. The vast majority of my
collections has been photographed in gym environments and the visual codes of fitness and body
building continuously reappear throughout my work.
„RATS“ is both an invitation into my creative universe and a deeply personal passion project.
