Hybrid Identity – In the Process of Encounter
My graduation collection Hybrid Identity – In the Process of Encounter explores the question of how identity can emerge within the tension between different cultural influences. The starting point of the work is Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of the „third space,“ which he
describes as a site of encounter in which cultural meanings are not fixed but are continuously reconfigured through exchange.
Against this background, the collection is also a personal approach to my Filipino heritage. While German culture shapes my everyday life, the Filipino aspects of my background remain more fragmentary and only indirectly accessible, creating a field of tension characterized by both proximity and distance. My name is Angelique, I come from Hamburg, and I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in summer 2025. Afterwards, I moved to Paris for an internship at IRO, where I worked as a Design Assistant in the Tailoring Department. This experience forms an important foundation for my intended Master’s studies in Fashion Design at the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin. Art has always been a natural way for me to question and explore the world. During my
Bachelor’s studies, I discovered fashion as a medium that allows me to negotiate and make visible social, cultural, and personal themes through design. I am particularly interested in the archetypal elements of fashion. I find it fascinating to reinterpret them, shift them, and place them into a contemporary context.
